An 1892 chart of the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays from the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, covering both bays in full, from Philadelphia and the Delaware River down to the Chesapeake entrance at Cape Henry. Baltimore, Washington, and Richmond all appear on the sheet, along with the Potomac, Rappahannock, and James Rivers, and thousands of depth soundings extend well offshore into the Atlantic. Tables of lights, tides, and light vessels occupy the upper corners, and compass roses are placed in the bay and off the coast. Charts like this were the working reference for pilots and merchant traffic on two of the busiest waterways on the East Coast.
