An 1856 sheet of illustrations of the glacier systems of the Alps from William Blackwood and Sons, covering ground in Switzerland, France, and Italy. Two large maps at the top show the glaciers of Mont Blanc and the snow fields of the Bernese Oberland, tinted blue where the ice lies. Below them are a detailed sketch of the Mer de Glace above Chamonix, a map of the erratic deposits in the Rhone valley, small studies of glacier shapes, and a diagram of the snow line at different latitudes from the equator to the poles. The plate was made for a physical atlas, drawing on the surveys of Professor Forbes at a time when scientists were still working out how glaciers moved. Unearthed from the archives and restored by Coast & Horizon's cartographers, meticulously color-corrected. Printed on museum-quality matte paper, 250 gsm archival stock.
